5 Mindset Shifts For When You Have Negative Thoughts

Do you notice yourself being a bit more negative than usual? You keep getting caught up in drama and nothing is working out. It may seem like the world is against you! It’s easy to hold on to negative thoughts and emotions. We all do it. It’s like an addiction honestly. Negativity breeds more negativity!

So how do you stop that? How do you have fewer negative thoughts and move forward in a happy and positive way? You change your mindset of course!

Here are some mindset shifts you can make to ditch your negative thoughts.

Why your mindset matters

Your mind is very powerful! It’s crazy how the way you THINK can actually have an effect on how you feel. Not only how you feel but how you view the world.

If you’re wearing “doom and gloom” glasses, everything looks a little darker, right? But when you swap those for a more positive pair, suddenly, things don’t seem so bad. It’s not the end-all-be-all fix for negativity but with practice, you can actually see the world in a more positive way.

Negative thoughts literally start in your mind. If you can alter how you think, you won’t have all those nasty negative thoughts. Since you can’t change the world around you it’s important to take control of your mindset.

When you adopt a positive mindset, you’re more likely to see opportunities instead of obstacles, which naturally leads to more happiness and contentment!!

Mindset shifts for your negative thoughts

So, now that you understand your mindset is pretty important for stopping your negative thoughts, here are some mindset shifts you can make!

Challenge your thoughts

We have all heard of good ol’ Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. This is right out of the book of CBT. Sometimes when you have negative thoughts and your mindset is in the gutter you need to challenge those thoughts. Many times our thoughts are simply not true.

Negative thoughts love to pop up uninvited. “I’m not good enough,” “I’ll probably fail,” or the classic “What if everything goes wrong?” sound familiar? But here’s the good news: you don’t have to believe everything your mind tells you.

When a negative one shows up, pause and ask, “Is this really true?” Challenge it. Look for evidence that proves otherwise. You might just realize that your brain is being overly dramatic!

By questioning these thoughts, you can replace them with more balanced, positive ones.

Focus on gratitude

Gratitude is one of those things when practiced regularly can make a huge impact on your mindset but people rarely focus on it. Why? Because it can feel weird!

Society is hardwired to be a little cynical and negative. We aren’t usually telling people about all the great things that happen– we focus on gossip, rumors, and bad stuff.

However, when you start to focus on the good things (no matter how small), the world starts to seem a little brighter. Think about it—did you enjoy a hot cup of coffee this morning? Have a good laugh with a friend? Even those tiny moments can flip your day around when you start to appreciate them. It’s all about shifting your focus from what’s missing to what’s already here.

You don’t need to wait for something huge to happen—just noticing small joys and jotting down a few things you’re thankful for can work wonders. So next time you’re feeling low, take a moment to reflect on the good stuff. It’s like hitting the reset button for your brain, and suddenly, your negative thoughts are a thing of the past.

Stop playing the victim

We all slip into “victim mode” from time to time. Sometimes, we get stuck in it though. Everything feels like it’s happening to you. “Why does this always happen to me?” or “Life’s so unfair” might cross your mind. But here’s the thing: staying in that mindset just keeps you stuck.

The victim mentality leaves you feeling helpless. That’s a horrible feeling!! Sure, you can’t always change what happens, but you can change how you respond to it. When you stop seeing yourself as a victim, you start recognizing your own power to create change—even if it’s just changing your attitude.

Shifting out of victim mode is like stepping out of the passenger seat and into the driver’s seat of your life. You start to realize that even in tough times, you’ve got the ability to steer your mindset towards something more positive.

Learn to reframe your thoughts

When you have negative thoughts it’s easy for your brain to turn it into something so much worse. Your brain likes to focus on the bad, remember? It’s like that one negative thought grabs the wheel and drives you straight to “Worst-Case Scenario City.” But guess what? You have the power to change the route by reframing your thoughts!

Instead of thinking, “I messed up, everything’s ruined,” try flipping it to, “I made a mistake, but I’m learning from it.” See the difference? One drags you down, the other lifts you up.

Reframing your thoughts comes from a place of self-compassion instead of self-criticism.

Let go of what you can’t control

Here’s the truth: some things in life are just out of our control. And trying to micromanage the universe? It’s exhausting!

I know it can be hard to let go– I am a Virgo after all. However, allowing yourself to have all these negative thoughts over things you can’t do anything about is kind of silly, isn’t it?

So, what if instead of stressing about the uncontrollable, you focused on what you can do? It’s about redirecting that energy toward things you can change—like your attitude, your reactions, and your next steps.

When you stop trying to control everything, you make room for peace, flexibility, and—yep—a more positive mindset.
