A Feel-Good Summer Morning Routine To Best Start Your Day

A new season asks for a change of routines – don’t you think so too? As summer approaches, I’m sure you’re looking for inspiration to create the best summer morning routine. Well, no need to look any further – this post got you covered!

In this article, you’ll discover the 7 most effective, feel-good habits you should add to your summer routine to feel your best. So, are you ready to start your mornings on the right foot? Then, let’s dive in!

Here’s what you can do in the morning in the summer

Have a slow start

I’m a huge believer that there is a season for everything – both in life and nature.

While winter invites you to slow down and tune in with yourself on a deeper level, summer has the power to make you feel the exact opposite: you want to be out and about – don’t you? 😉

As we tend to fill our summer days with brunches with our gals, drinks after work, and day trips at the beach – it’s important you maintain a balance in your personal and social life.

Spontaneity is one of the best aspects of summer, but you need to be prepared for it! 

One rule of thumb that allowed me to embrace the spontaneity of life, during the summer months, while still being self-focused (when needed) has been to start my summer mornings slowly. On my terms.

The rest of the day I can say ‘yes’ to spontaneous hangouts or last-minute plans. But, when I first wake up, I want to make sure I spend some intentional time with myself.

So, if you want to have the best summer morning routine, first of all, you need to make sure you start your days slowly. Take your time. Tune in with yourself, before you tune in with the rest of the world.

Why? Because once you’ve taken care of yourself, you’ll be a better and more positive presence in others’ lives too.

Gently awaken your body

Starting your day slowly means that you no longer indulge in snoozing the alarm and rush out of the door within five minutes of jumping out of bed. (Nope, those days are long gone!)

A slow start allows you to do all the things you always say you want to do, but never have time for. 

One of the best habits you could include in your summer morning routine is gently awakening your body

How? You could engage in:

  • Some gentle stretches
  • A stroll around your neighborhood
  • 5 or 10 minutes of yoga
  • A low-impact workout

Take the time to tune in with your body. Feel it. Be present. Where do you feel the tension? Did you get a restful night’s sleep? Do you feel anxious or calm?

Make the most of those early sunrises and get all the benefits of exposure to sunlight first thing in the morning, as you consistently take care of your body. (Even if it’s only for 5 minutes a day ;)) The perfect summer morning routine starts with sunshine.

Make a “fun” breakfast

I don’t know about you, but the thought of breakfast gets me to roll out of bed every morning! (Yes, I’m *that* type of girl ;))

Whether you’re like me – or you couldn’t care less about breakfast -, why not take advantage of the new season to experiment a little in the kitchen? What if you find the perfect recipe that will motivate you to get up? 

Let’s be honest: summer veggies and fruits are the best! So, why not use them to switch up your usual meals and make them a little more “fun”?

Here is how you could make your breakfast more “fun” (so that you’ll have a good reason to jump out of bed in the morning)

  • Add some raspberries to your iced matcha latte
  • Switch your regular smoothie to a more tropical one (using mango, pineapple, papaya, etc…)
  • Make flavored waters (by adding oranges, cucumbers, or wild berries)

This is your sign to go the extra mile, in the kitchen, this summer – it’s worth it!

Write your top 3 for the day

Unfortunately, it can’t be all fun and games. Even if it’s summer, I’m sure you still have much on your mind – although you’d wish to relax on a beach. (Me too, me too…)

As I’ve already mentioned in point #1, summer is for being spontaneous. But, if you’re a type-A kind of girl (like me), it might be hard to “chill out”.

I mean, there’s still a lot you need to do…so, how can you best embrace spontaneity while still making sure you get some things done along the way? 

Well, I’m about to share with you the secret habit you should add to your morning routine to be productive and still keep fun in the equation! 😉 You’ve got to keep it short and simple! 

How? Every day, I want you to pull out your agenda or the notes app on your phone, and write down the top 3 for that day.

“What are the three most important tasks you must accomplish today?”

It’s summer – so forget about your endless to-do list! Just make sure you get your non-negotiables done and, once you’ve tackled them…well, just go with the flow! 🙂

Take care of your mental health

After you’ve properly taken care of your body, it’s time to nurture your mind too.

Considering that, in summer, you’re likely to invest a lot of energy into others – it’s essential you don’t forget to take care of your mental health as well.

Starting your days on your terms allows you to dedicate some intentional time not only to take care of your body but also to connect with your inner self.

Although everyone is different and there’s no one-fits-all habit, here is a list of the most beneficial practices you could consider adopting in your summer morning routine:

  • Journaling
  • Meditation
  • Affirmations
  • Keeping a gratitude journal
  • Reading

Try them out and see what works best for you. 

Here are three questions that might help you pick up the perfect habit for you:

  • How do you want to feel shortly after waking up? 
  • What does make you feel at your best? 
  • How do you best process your emotions?

No screens for 1 hour

If you’re following the steps I recommended you so far, by now you should’ve realized that…you have no time to use your phone!

Well, it’s because you’re not supposed to use your phone first thing in the morning 😉

Especially during the summer months, when everyone seems to be on vacation or to have more fun plans than you do, you’ll want to cut down as much as possible your screen time. 

Why? Because you can’t compare yourself to others if you don’t see what they’re doing 😉

When you decide to scroll on your phone first thing in the morning, you’re immediately letting the outside world trigger you. 

But, is looking at others’ lives more important than living yours? Do you want to waste your time on them, rather than working on you?

So, as a general rule of thumb, a good habit for the summer is to reduce your screen time and – ideally – make sure that the “no screen for the first hour” rule is part of your morning routine 😉

Do one thing only for you

Summer is for fun! So, why not make your summer morning routine more fun too?!

This summer, I want you to start your days by doing one thing for you, and you only.

Take your bucket list and, from there, do one thing each day. What is it that you’ve always wanted to try but never did? What is on your summer wishlist? How do you want to make progress, this summer? 

It’s totally up to you – but, here are some ideas that might inspire you:

  • Prepare your jam
  • Cultivate some plants and flowers
  • Start writing your short novel
  • Have breakfast in your backyard
  • Go on a solo brunch date
  • Watch the sunrise at the beach
  • Practice yoga outside
  • Do a cold plunge
  • Go for a long bike ride
  • Paint on a canva
  • Make your jewelry

Whatever it is that can make you happy, do more of that.
