9 Books That Will Improve Your Side Hustle Mindset

I swear everyone I know either has a side hustle or they want to have a side hustle. It’s just the way of the world now! The dream of working for yourself and being your own boss is way more appealing than the 9-5. I have my own side hustle (aka this blog) and my dreams of growing it into a full-time job are HUGE. Having control over your daily life, work hours, and free time is calling out for me like the ocean called out for Moana.

There is a big step between thinking about a side hustle and doing it. There is a big step between starting a side hustle and making it a full-time job. The in-between is HARD. Balancing your passion project with a full-time job is exhausting and some days it might not even seem worth it. Like why does it seem easier for everyone else?!

Remembering your why is important! No one is an overnight success as much as it may seem on social media. Everyone has to work through the messy middle. So, how can you make the messy middle a little bit easier? Read books that inspire, motivate, and educate! I love reading books that give me a little something to keep me going or even make me better.

Check out this list of books that will improve your side hustle mindset and help you keep going and growing.

What is a side hustle?

Chances are if you are reading this blog post you know what a side hustle is. However, if you are brand new to the idea here is a quick overview.

A side hustle is something you do on the side of your current job to make money. Simple!

Many people start out by doing something for fun as a hobby but then it ends up making them money. For example, you might enjoy crocheting in your free time and have become pretty good at it. Someone at work sees your new crochet scarf and asks where it’s from. You say you made it and they ask if they can buy one. Next thing you know you’ve created an Etsy shop selling your crochet creations!

Other people start a side hustle with the immediate purpose of it being a side hustle. These days I think this is a bit more normal because life is expensive and many people need the extra income. The idea of starting a business and growing it into something bigger is also a huge motivator for many people who want to exit the regular workforce (like me).

The side hustle mindset

Your mindset matters! The brain is a powerful part of who we are. When you think a certain way it actually does impact the rest of your life.

People who have a side hustle or want to have a side hustle need to think a little differently.

Working more when you get home from work can be draining. Some days will be harder than others. Your mindset is what will set you apart from others.

Your side hustle is an investment in yourself

There have been many times I have wanted to give up on growing my blog. The time and energy didn’t seem worth it. However, I was able to switch my mindset to realize that I am investing in myself and my future when I put time and energy into the blog. You aren’t doing yourself any favors by giving up early. Your hard work is a direct investment into you (unlike your job where your hard work is an investment into the company).

Every action is an opportunity

Having a growth mindset will help you find success. A fixed mindset will keep you stuck, sad, and quitting. When you can change your mindset to view every action as an opportunity you will be much more likely to try harder. Every failure is a lesson learned. Every minute worked is a chance you’ll grow.

Try, try, and try again

Being resilient is a must when it comes to side hustles and businesses. Not everything you try will work and that’s okay – just try again. Having a “try again” mindset is crucial. Being able to remain positive and be creative over and over is not only a great mindset but it’s a skill! Changing the way you think doesn’t happen overnight so keep trying even when you feel down on yourself or like nothing is working. Practice your “try again” mindset when changing your own thoughts!

Books to inspire your side hustle mindset

Books can teach you so many wonderful things without even trying. Having someone share their own story about business or lessons they learned can be so inspiring and educational. I also love a good educational read but sometimes you just need someone to tell their story to get motivated. There are a variety of books on this list so I hope you find at least one of them helpful for you.

Everything is Figureoutable

Probably one of my favourite “self-help” books out there. If you tend to give up when the going gets tough this is for you. Marie talks about her story of becoming an entrepreneur and shares many of her failures. She also shares her awesome mindset which is “everything is figureoutable.” I use this mindset in all aspects of my life but it has been especially helpful with my side hustles and business ventures because there is a lot that needs to be figured out on a daily basis. A must-read in my opinion!

The Lazy Genius Way: Embrace What Matters, Ditch What Doesn’t, and Get Stuff Done

This is a book that doesn’t guilt you into doing better and being better. It’s about finding life hacks that make your life easier (which people with limited time definitely need). Kendra helps you figure out what is most important in your life and then how to do those things smarter. Everything is about finding hacks that work for you!

Boss Up!: This Ain’t Your Mama’s Business Book

This is one of the first books I ever listened to on audio! I found it helpful in a more general and motivating way. It’s geared towards moms – which I am not – but I still found so many things useful. Overall I think this is a great book for any woman who wants to start a business or already has a business. Lindsay’s personal story is inspiring and hearing how she has become so successful while being a stay-at-home mom really pushed me forward in the beginning

Hustle Harder, Hustle Smarter

A surprising favourite of mine. There is just something about a story of grit and perseverance that motivates a person. While I can’t really relate to 50 Cent at all, it doesn’t even matter. His resilience and hard-working lifestyle is super motivating. If nothing else it is an entertaining read that will give you the kick in the pants you need to get to work. I loved the audio version because 50 Cent himself reads it.

The Multi-Hyphen Life: Work Less, Create More, and Design a Life That Works for You

Having multiple things going on in life is the norm now. This book shows you how to live a life you love by doing the things you love without having to give things up. Multiple streams of income, making your current job work for you, and changing routines to fit your lifestyle are some of the topics in this book.

Girl Code: Unlocking the Secrets to Success, Sanity, and Happiness for the Female Entrepreneur

This is not a new book but it’s still relevant today because it’s good. Girl Code is meant to be a roadmap for female entrepreneurs. The blurb on the back states this book won’t teach you how to build a multi-million dollar business or teach you systems and finance. But it will teach you how to build confidence in yourself and make connections with others which ultimately helps your life and business. The reviews on this book are pretty outstanding. Many people swear by Cara and have said this book totally changed their businesses, careers, and lives.

You Are a Badass at Making Money: Master the Mindset of Wealth

The book you need to read if you need some help with your mindset and relationship with money. Jen is known to write super helpful books with humor and sass. You will learn what’s holding you back financially, help you create a new relationship with money, and unlock your earning potential.

You’re Kind of a Big Deal: Level Up by Unlocking Your Audacity

I have gotten in my own way so many times and chances are so have you. This book gives you the tools to break free from your limiting beliefs and make your dreams a reality. Erin promotes the idea of being the CEO of your life! The reviews are really good. Lots of women have been inspired by this book and Erin.

Clever Girl Finance: The Side Hustle Guide: Build a Successful Side Hustle and Increase Your Income

Another book on money but this one is a guide to side hustling and making money. A great read for newer side hustle girlys or someone who needs a bit more of a step-by-step guide. Get your pen and paper out and take some notes from this one.

Final thoughts

I am a big reader so it’s no secret that I like turning to books for new information. There is a lot to learn when you start a side hustle and honestly, endless information. It can be overwhelming to even find something to read!

These are some popular and helpful books on different aspects of business (mindset, money, grit, confidence, strategy, etc).

The crazy thing about building a side hustle or full-on business is that the majority of the work is internal. Yes, you need to do the work for whatever business you are starting but YOU will be the biggest obstacle and barrier. Working on yourself is key to building a successful business.

Hopefully one of these books speaks to you! I love when a book pulls you in and then you finish with a sense of purpose and drive. Nothing better.
