Ways To Be Mindful At The Start Of A New Month

Mindfulness has been a bit of a buzzword lately! It seems like everyone and their dog have been talking about being more mindful, setting intentions, and meditation lately. There are so many ways to be mindful but figuring that out can be a bit overwhelming.
It got me thinking about my own life and where I could be being a bit more mindful and what mindfulness even means to me.
So, let’s talk about mindfulness and how we can all start being more mindful, especially at the start of a new month!
What is mindfulness?
You might be wondering what mindfulness even is… I know I was!
Mindfulness is a way of being. It’s our awareness of the present moment and how we are thinking and/or feeling without judgment.
Mindfulness and meditation often get confused because of how similar they seem! However, meditation is a way to practice mindfulness.
Mindfulness can be achieved in many ways that have nothing to do with meditation so if that’s not your thing, no worries!
So to sum it up: mindfulness is a way of being and our awareness in the present moment.
How to be mindful at the beginning of the month
I think it’s important to reflect on how to improve yourself and what better time to do that than the start of a new month?
We could all be a bit more present. My phone often has a chokehold on me and then I’ll notice, hey, I’ve been scrolling for 2 hours.
Funny enough, the other day it started to snow like crazy. I was sitting in my living room with big windows open and I didn’t even notice it started to snow because I was scrolling on TikTok!!
So how can you be more mindful at the start of the month? What does that even look like?
What new month mindfulness could look like
Mindfulness at the beginning of the month could look like INTENTIONS.
Start the month by setting a monthly intention. They could be something like:
- Less screen time
- More time with family
- Speaking positively about yourself
- Making time for things you love
Intentions are kind of like themes. They aren’t goals necessarily, but they are themes you want to follow. They guide you as the month goes on!
Ways to be mindful this month
Journal
Spend time at the start of the month reflecting on how you feel. How is life going? Are you happy? What is going well right now?
Focus on the present and think of it as a check-in with yourself!

Meditate
If you are like me then you aren’t a huge fan of meditation. However, I have found some guided meditations helpful.
Find a short guided meditation about fresh starts or a new month!
Take a mindful walk
Start the month off by going for a walk in your favorite place!
Focus on the act of walking itself. Pay attention to what’s around you. What sounds do you hear? What do you see?
Do a brain dump
Empty your mind at the start of the month. You could write out all the things you need to do this month.
You could also just write everything on your mind. What your worries are. Things you’re thinking about. To do tasks. Thoughts about yourself.
Let your brain wander and write. No judgment!
Do yoga
Start the month by moving your body and paying attention to how it feels. Be one with your muscles and focus on the poses.
There are some really good yoga YouTubers! Some I’ve come across:
- Yoga with Adriene
- Boho Beautiful
- Popular fitness (not all yoga but I like their yoga videos)
Draw or color
Grab a coloring book or some blank paper and get to work!
I love coloring. It’s fun, a great way to relax, and can help you focus on the present moment.
Declutter
Start the month by decluttering a space in your house.
Go through items and really think about how they make you feel. Do you really love this dress anymore? Does the necklace your ex-boyfriend gave you make you feel the same way as it did before?
Spend time going through things in a non-judgmental way and allow yourself to really acknowledge how you feel about certain things in your house.
Mindful eating
Spend your mornings truly enjoying your breakfast and coffee or tea! Put the phone down, turn the TV off, and just be with yourself while you eat. Not only is this a way to connect with yourself more, it’s also a healthier way to eat! You could even try these self-care teas while you mindfully eat!

New month, new you
Being mindful is a great practice any time of the month. However, it’s a great way to start a new month.
Setting intentions and finding ways to practice mindfulness at the beginning of a new month grounds you and sets you up for success.
As you learn more and become more comfortable with mindfulness you can incorporate it into your daily life!
For now, pick one or two things from the list and add them to your new month’s routine.
If you already do a monthly reflection, start adding in a brain dump. If you already set goals at the start of the month, start setting an intention too!
It really is the small things that improve your life!
How will you be mindful this month?

Great summary and breakdown. Such helpful tips. Will be pinning! 🙂
Thanks so much for reading 🙂
I agree with you Deanna. Setting intentions and finding ways to practice mindfulness at the beginning of a new month grounds you and sets you up for success. Great tips to start off a new month with mindfulness. I love the idea of decluttering! It really boosts my mood to know things are where they belong!
Totally agree!
Honest;y I would love to have less screen at the beginning of the month. But because of my job, it’s impossible. These are great tips!
That would be a good one for sure!!
Hi Deanna I love this article and it’s exactly what I needed to read today especially since it’s a NEW Month! I feel like I’ve been spending too much time on my phone and not being mindful, causing me to feel cranky or more stressed than usual. I also love your other suggestions like decluttering, spending time with family, and journaling. I’m all about mindful walks so I wrote an article about it for those of us who are interested in trying this exercise to practice mindfulness while being active https://pantearahimian.com/mindful-walking-simple-steps-to-boost-your-mood/
I’m so glad it resonated with you! I totally feel the phone thing… I need to put mine down more too
Love this! Mindfulness is so important. I love doing yoga and taking walks, it definitely helps!
Walks are my fav!
Fab ideas! I’ve been decluttering over the past few days and always feel so much better for it! Being “present” in walks definitely helps too!
Decluttering makes you feel so good!!
I love these tips! It’s too easy for us to get sucked into out phones and forget to me mindful!
Right?! Being present is important 🙂
This is great advice. I love a good brain dump and decluttering project.
Me too!
Totally in sync with you on this post. Walks for mindfulness are my number one thing to chill out. Agree on the brain dump and purging. Have a great March!
Happy new month 🙂
This was an eye-opener and a great way to refocus my energy towards something positive and uplifting. Journaling and decluttering are two of my favorite activities that help me focus on being mindful, and this guide gave me more great tips on how to do them. It’s a real game-changer!
